A drag pointer records the maximum force reached when the material tears, allowing the result to be documented and compared across multiple test points. The instrument is supplied with two drag pointers, one for use and one as a replacement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor safety, the pointed test needle must only be used by instructed professionals and must never be applied to living beings. When not in use, the supplied protective foam cover should be placed over the needle tip.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow to Use\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePlace the Bettsometer horizontally on a table, with the test needle extending freely over the edge and pointing downward. Ensure the needle tip does not touch any surface to prevent premature wear.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWith the Bettsometer in the horizontal measuring position, adjust the zero point using the tare screw located on the top of the instrument.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eMove the white drag pointer close to the zero position. A second drag pointer is supplied as a replacement.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLay the fabric to be tested, such as balloon silk, kite fabric, parachute fabric or sailcloth, flat on a table.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSecure the fabric gently at the edge of the table using a wide clamp. For example, two wooden slats with screw clamps can be used to hold the fabric securely without damaging it.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eGently tension the fabric horizontally across the edge of the table. This can be done with one hand or with the assistance of a second person.\u003cbr\u003eHold the Bettsometer near the base of the test needle and carefully push the needle vertically down through the slightly tensioned fabric. Do not touch the drag pointer.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eHold the Bettsometer by its handle and slowly pull it away from the table. Maintain a consistent pulling speed for each measurement. The needle tip should be positioned slightly diagonally in the direction of the pull.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCarefully observe the fabric at the point where the test needle penetrates it.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAs soon as the fabric begins to tear or gives way audibly, immediately stop pulling and release the tension on the Bettsometer.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe drag pointer will remain at the maximum force reached when the fabric tears. Do not touch or move the drag pointer before recording the measured value.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRepeat the test at several different points on the fabric and record each measurement.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe lowest measured tear strength represents the weakest point of the material and can be used as an indication of whether the fabric requires replacement.
